Tinel’s Test, formerly known as the Hoffman-Tinel Sign, is a simple test that doctors use to check for nerve issues. It is most commonly used to diagnose Carpal Tunnel and is one of the first tests that most doctors will reference when attempting to diagnose CTS, a condition often caused by a repetitive strain injury at work.

Additionally, proper evaluation, assessments, and diagnostics tests are needed to ensure a diagnosis-based treatment that targets the root cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. In carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), one of the nerves to the hand (the median nerve) becomes compressed as it passes through the wrist. There are different causes which can lead to CTS like occupational overstressing of the hands, injuries at the wrist with malposition of the carpal bones, arthritis, pregnancy, diabetes, overweight and others. Also a genetic predisposition is discussed. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is defined as the entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal canal at the wrist.

Additionally this test can be ordered if the hand numbness, tingling or weakness persists greater than 3 months with no relief from other therapies EVEN IF YOU HAVE ONLY MINOR SYMPTOMS. This can make the nerve more susceptible to being injured from compression in the wrist and may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. So the electrodiagnostic test allows us to localize where that site of compression is. If a patient had neurological symptoms like weakness or numbness, electrodiagnostic testing might be the appropriate thing to do.
